With the arrival of the holiday season, we are thankful for the abundance that we have and want to help those around not as fortunate. Especially the children. This year, LLG is hosting a Holiday Drive for a local organization called Cradles to Crayons Chicago. Their mission is to provide children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive – at home, at school, and at play. They use the term “Clothing Insecurity” as part of their efforts to formally recognize the issue. They supply these items free of charge by engaging and connecting communities.
Childhood poverty is a serious nationwide issue. 1 in 2 children in Chicago live in poverty. Winter in our region can be brutally cold. The kids they help don’t have shoes that fit. Or a coat warm enough to fend off winter winds. Or a backpack to carry their schoolbooks and supplies. Without these basics, they suffer. They don’t want to go to school. They have a hard time learning in school. They don’t go outside to play. They don’t feel valued.
Cradles to Crayons accepts new or gently-used items. The most needed items are:
Winter coats, warm clothing, gloves, mittens, hats, boots, pajamas. Socks and underwear (must be NEW).
LLG will have a box in our office and will be collecting donations from now through December 20.
With your help, we can ensure we are ready to keep Chicagoland children safe and warm this winter.
